Bankless: NFTs are evolving, please pay attention to these five trends

KingData ·2022-04-08

While the NFT ecosystem is growing rapidly, the pattern has also been changing. Trends such as animation PFP projects, Shitpost NFT, craftable collectibles, and more NFTfi integration are expected to gain further traction.

The NFT ecosystem is going through a period of rapid growth.

Accordingly, the landscape of the field has been changing, and this constant movement often leads to the rapid emergence of NFT trends.

At this point, some of the newer NFT topics have made a lot of progress recently, or are on the verge of progress in my opinion.

So, let’s take a look at five NFT trends that I think are poised to gain further traction in Q2 2022.

1. Anime PFP Project

Delphi Digital NFT expert Teng recently noted that around March 2022, the NFT economy appears to be entering its third major market cycle since June 2021.

If we look at transaction volume, a key indicator of the NFT economy, we can divide it into several stages:

Before the inflection point (before June 21)

Cycle 1 (Jun-21 end-October): Art Mania

Cycle 2 (end Oct-Mar'21): PFP mania

3rd cycle (March 21 -?)

So, what's driving this new wave of activity? A major contributing factor, Teng believes, is the explosion of anime-themed Azuki NFT series since January 2022.

Often a trigger point can lead to a new wave of attention. In this case, Azuki kicked off the third cycle with the reputation of "Better Art", "The Next BAYC".

This is the 3rd PFP project to cross the 30 E/$100k mark; only BAYC and Punks have done it before, and MAYC is a little short.

Azuki's rapid popularity has also sparked a new wave of other anime NFT projects throughout the ecosystem, such as Akuma, Kiwami, Shinsekai, and more. Therefore, inertia and homeopathy will make anime PFP the main trend in the coming months.

2. Shitpost NFT

"I haven't actively traded NFTs for a long time, I don't know what is ranked first today"

frankfrank…

Wikipedia describes shitposting as posting "offensive, satirical, low-quality" content online. The frankfrank project launched a day ago represents the boom of shitpost NFTs, or at least a symbol of this type's decisive entry into the mainstream of the NFT ecosystem. This project is difficult to explain because there is really nothing to explain, but the nearly 2000 ETH transactions surrounding frank NFTs since the project’s launch speak for themselves. Don't turn a blind eye to truly strange things.

3. Craftable collectibles

The minting of HyperLoot, a new NFT project in the wider Lootverse, kicked off this week. I've seen a lot of people say they really enjoyed the minting experience, and I can see why: it allows customizing your character in a really fun way! And this is just the latest example of NFT collections that allow minters to personalize their NFTs, and I'm looking forward to this trend becoming an increasingly popular way for future projects. It makes collecting a shared entertainment process, and I think this dynamic can have many positive downstream effects on collecting.

4. More "NFTfi" integration

The Idols is a recently launched NFT project with collectibles backed by Lido-backed ETH or stETH, an increasingly popular yield token in DeFi. Additionally, fixed-income and variable-income DeFi protocol Element Finance has just launched its own Elfiverse NFT collection.

Whether it’s a community-run project like The idol or an official DeFi project like Elfiverse, there’s no doubt that we’re about to see more DeFi + NFT experiments. So keep an eye on the "NFTfi" track.

5. Full chain NFT

My previous Metaversal article was about full-chain NFTs, but I've seen more full-chain NFT collections emerge since then, so I thought I should reiterate that we'll see more of this in the near future s project. The recent heat for this trend stems from the introduction of the Layer Zero protocol, an interoperability protocol that enables blockchains to easily communicate with each other. This capability opens up new possibilities for NFTs, so I very much expect to see more early experiments around full-chain technology in the near future.
